Dear hopeful reader,
I don’t know why, but I always listen to a-ha during winter. There’s something magical about their music. It’s comforting, cradling. It whispers, and sometimes roars, everything will be all right.
Winter is always difficult for me. My body aches more, every limb rigid. I’m more fatigued, sadder. Especially in February, I’ve noticed. Although it’s a short month, it feels like it drags on and on and on. It’s an in-between of winter and spring in New Jersey, and physiologically confusing.
But, the sky paints colors different mid-February. The clouds hold less heaviness. There’s more light and blue. And I can’t help but feel hope, and nature’s rebirth as everything is still still but changing quietly, gently.
Several years ago I made a found poem out of lines of a-ha’s songs, most of them greatest hits. It happened in winter, and it was quite apropos. I hope you like what came out of it.

Surviving winter sky with a-ha
Out on the fields
I reached inside myself today
To search
Through wilderness and pain
The swing of things
I reach the edge of town
There’s no end to the lengths I’ll go to
Lend some warmth to our cold
It won’t be long now
Seasons can’t last
Now in the mirror stands
One shot of a clear blue sky
And I try and I try and I try
I dream myself alive
In the living daylights
Blue sky’s here for me
I know
I know that I’m alive

If you want to experiment with found poetry creation, I highly recommend starting with lines from a favorite musician’s songs. Or you could focus on lyrics from just one song. Anyway. What do you listen to that brings you comfort in wintertime?
Yours hopefully,
Nadia
