“Craving shadows to cast light upon them...” Yes yes yes yes!!!! I’m in love with this phrase!!!!

And oh!!!! Spa sounds absolutely incredible. All of them do, but I’m especially a nut for anyone who jabs at the wellness culture.

Your reflections on necessary darkness speak to my soul. Thank you.🙏

Thank you so much, Kimberly! I don't know if happy is the right word to express that this speaks to you, but I'm glad we're not alone in feeling this way. Spa is one cray cray ride. My goodness. You'd love it.

Lovely recs! Have read some of Fangs when the author used to release it online page by page, but I think the full graphic novel contains a bunch of exclusive material. Still, I’d love to read the whole thing.

But the one I really have my heart set on is Goodbye, Eri. I’ve checked and my local bookstore has it, so I’ll go and buy it sometime this week or the next. Will update with thoughts once I’ve read it.

Thank you so much, Andrei! Fangs is a funny one. The cover is beautiful, the texture, you want to just touch it all day lol. Goodbye, Eri is something truly special and mind-blowing, just from a technical perspective alone. I hope you get to read it soon!

Cool recommendations! I've been looking for horror stories to read and review, thanks a bunch!

Thanks so much for reading! I find Spa and Goodbye, Eri especially striking.

Ok, I read SPA in one sitting. I couldn't put it down! What a darkly comedic commentary on wellness culture. And the illustrations are A+. Thank you so much for sending that my way… my husband has it on his lap next.

Wow! I'm so delighted to hear that, Kimberly! I hope your husband also likes it. I definitely also ate it up in one sitting. It was riveting and surreal.

Yay! Plunging into the dark pits of our human experiences, my favourite! “humans create from the abyss, from tar, from heart pieces, gutted bowels all to rid themselves of whatever afflicts them, even just a smidge of a vast (w)hole” - you, my dear, are a genius. I’m so appreciative of the ones among us who choose to wade into the underworld and to stand in the darkness long enough that our eyes might adjust and we begin to see what it is that lies beneath. Everything deserves to be seen, even if only once. Thank you, darling 🖤✨ PS. Spa looks amazing!!

Thank YOU, darling. You're a pioneer and inspiration of facing darkness, especially something so formidable and foreboding as death. And with such peace, calm, wisdom. I could never! Spa is one mad book, I must say. I think you'd like it! <3

Wow, I’ve never been called to read graphic novels until now!

Nadia, the way your words captivate and invigorate me with a surge of lively energy is so valued by me! I particularly love this post because not only am I introduced to some great books to read, but the perceptive in which you presented each comic really emphasises the comfort felt in darkness. A feeling that I know too well but have forgotten because I’ve been forcing myself to stay with the light at times.

But you are so right! There is a powerful light found when you explore the dark! And I can’t wait to give these comics a try in the near future to discover what other revelations I can take from this type of storytelling.

Thank you my queen for the recommendations! Definitely been wanting to explore different writing/story genres to encourage more reading.

Thank you for such an amazing comment, dear Kharissa! Gratitude for sharing your vulnerability with me. I know what you mean about forcing yourself into light. I remember doing that, but eventually, when it does not feel right, it backfires. It is okay for you to explore the dark, sit still with it, as long as you do not get yourself stuck in there. Everything should be in balance in life. 💕

100% agree with you! So grateful for your perspective on darkness because I often find this topic to be a bit taboo when it comes to healing and nurturing. As you said, there is a balance so I hope to continue to embrace the moments of darkness with as much appreciation as the moments of lightness ✨

I found the way to truly find peace is to face darkness head on. Then I felt more acceptance of the slivers as lessons for me to learn. When you have that mindset, it's not as scary or daunting. Of course, we need light to not drown. Again, balance! :) <3 And yes, it's often taboo to explore depths of our humanity, but more people are coming to the realization that it's necessary.

So beautifully said! Especially after years in quarantine and isolation from the world, it’s very beautiful how open people are becoming about their vulnerabilities, the darkness and the unknown. We definitely needed this refresh in mindset!

That was such a terrible time! Never again, I hope. Well, at least here, it's an indication people are open and vulnerable. <3

Happy New Year, Priya! Lovely to see you!

These are wonderful, Nadia - the cover of 'Fangs' reminds me a bit of Edward Gorey - and his 'Gashlycrumb Tinies' is one of my favorites, he's sort of the patron saint of morbid humor.

It is beautiful, isn't it! It also feels like cloth when you touch it. I must check out this Gorey person. Morbid humor is my jam. Thank you for popping, by my dear! :-*

Gosh, wow, these all look and sound amazing, Nadia.

I'm a huge Junji Ito fan, though sometimes I feel his incredible artwork doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with incredible stories. Uzumaki is one of the clear exceptions. So, if he's using someone else's stories here as inspiration then I'm all in. I'll add each of these to my to-read wishlist.

Very generous to offer sending one out as a giveaway, but I'm more than happy to purchase one myself :)

Hope you're doing OK, Nadia. 🤗

Happy 2024, my friend! Very delighted to see you. Thank you for reading. Yes, the approach looks a bit different than the usual work. There is also an additional story that is unrelated to Mimi which is even more interesting. You are always welcome to participate in the giveaway. I plan to do others in the future too. 😉🫶
