Wow, I haven’t seen any of these. Excited to give a few of them a try. I had been excited about Bones and All because I’m a fan of Timothy. Nice to know it’s worth the time. Excellent list!

Aaaah, that is thrilling for me to hear. I was hoping to hear that. I didn't want to list films that everyone knows about! You absolutely will love it. And yes, Timothy is amazing. Thanks so much, Taegan!

Same! And big big Timothy fan (he's such a dreamboat 😅 but seriously, the best way to get my wife to also watch this list is to simply mention Mr Chalamet is in one. Maybe I should lie and say he's in all of them, hehe).

Hahahah. You absolutely should. Tell him he wore prosthetics and disguise, that's why he's so unrecognizable LOL.

I saw Otesanek at too young an age, that was freaky. XD You're right about how powerful the story is, and what it says about human urges and longing is as powerful as the art of the motion picture can get. Erben's folk tale is suitable for kids though, be they kids of flesh or kids made of wood. :D Kytice (the Czech title was kept in English translation) is a must for fans of Slavic literature and fairy tales.

Oh my gosh, that may have been traumatizing, I imagine! I watched it maybe a decade ago. Rewatching some of the raw scenes gave me goose bumps. The mother's grief and longing are just so powerfully portrayed. Hahaha, nice, I'll keep Erben in mind for friends' kids, keep their roots growing lol.

Okay I’m scared now 😱

Hahaha. It's not all thaaaaaaaaat scary. Well depends on your immunity to horror films lol.

Expand full comment

It depends, I guess it depends all on the storyline in the amount of gore. If it’s heavy Gore, I have no interest. But horror, movies, like Alien, was dynamite and I love sci-fi stuff like that.

Expand full comment
author

Oh I love Alien too! Well the same director who made Men also made Annihilation and Ex Machina. Men has some gore which can be unpleasant, but it's mostly towards the end.

I went into Bones and All with zero clue what it was about and wow did that first scene surprise me!! Love feeling strange, can’t wait to sink my teeth into all these others 🙏

i love this list. Are you a yorgos lanthimos fan? All his stuff is great (The Lobster is the most well known I think?) but his first movie Dogtooth is so fucking wild I feel like you'd dig it based on this list. Also The Killing of a Sacred Deer

And then in a similar vein but less...dark, all of Ruben Ostlund's stuff -- The Square is my favorite , Force Majeure is a classic, and then his newest one Triangle ofSadness is fantastic lol

OH! A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence! Start with this one if you haven't seen it its so fucking gooooood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGwGyo5Ywpo

What an excellent selection! Thanks for sharing, Nadia. Adding all of them to my watchlist. Always good to get a little weird, right?! 😆

Heck yeah! The weirder, the weirder! ;D

Same! Onto the to-watch list they go.

Otik is on the top of my list ever since you mentioned it on Notes a while back. So weird!

I have not seen any of them so that's a great addition to my ever-growing imdb watchlist.

As to weird movies, I'd have to think, Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005) springs to mind, maybe more eccentric than weird, though.

Enjoy that one, or whatever is a more appropriate word ;p. Wow that film looks fun and awkward. Also adding that one to my list, thankies!

This is a pretty nice selection! I haven't heard of half of the titles here and am really interested in 'Come True' now. I've seen Hausu and it's insane! Like, I think I first learned of it when I attended a a panel on "the weirdest Japanese movies you've never seen."

If I could add a title to this list, it would be Sabu's "Monday," an obscure masterpiece that is hard to find outside Japan. Years before 'The Hangover,' THIS was the movie about what happens when you lose your memory after drinking for a long time. I keep meaning to write about it but can never find the time sadly. Here's a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR3TDPgrfHA&t

Wow, Monday looks like a wild film. I'll try to seek it out somehow. Hausu IS insane. But what an incredible film too. I think you'll like Come True. It sometimes makes me think of Silent Hill (at least some of the scenes) and Scorn.
